A more academic description or definition of a
case study is: a research paper which examines a person, place, event,
phenomenon, or other type of subject of analysis in order to extrapolate
key themes and results that help predict future trends, illuminate
previously hidden issues that can be applied to practice, and/or provide
a means for understanding an important research problem with greater
clarity
If you want to conduct a case study for your research, it means you
are looking to see how difficulties or certain aspects of our real lives
can influence decisions. This means you have to get what you know and
apply it to a real life situation. Let me give an example of a title:
Understanding Workplace Bullying in Umeme – A Case Study (please note
that this is merely an example of a topic, not that this actually
happens at Umeme).
What should a good case study entail? Consider the following:
- It is based on real life.
- Consists of many parts, each with its own point of discussion and difficulty.
- Adequate information is a must as the reader would need this to address the problem at hand.
- It is believable.
- It can also show relationships between two or among more than two subjects.
You can read more on case studies by following the links I have
included in the endnotes. Remember, this is for postgraduate study since
for undergraduate you are hardly ever required to conduct in-depth
research requiring this kind of method or research process.
