I have had the
not-so-pleasant experience of having to re-take an exam, and
unfortunately in a subject I did not enjoy. I performed poorly in the
subject because I did not give it my best attention. Fortunately, I had
classmates that cared enough to share their good knowledge of the
subject and encouraged me to consult with them on a weekly basis in
order to equip me with sufficient information on the subject. I learned a
lot through them and even grew fond of it to the point that I started
to consider the possibility of majoring in the particular subject. In
the end, I choose something else.
One of the greatest lessons I learned from this experience is that failing
an exam, or anything else for that matter, does not mean you write off
the possibility of ever succeeding in that particular area.
So, with the support of friends, I went
on to pass the exam and our studies together not only yielded a better
grade but also established a foundation of how to apply myself to future
challenges.
As a result of that experience, whenever
I'm faced with challenges and I’m unable to make the desired progress, I
am quick to seek counsel on how to better navigate the current
obstacle. This is a life skill that one cannot live without. Be it in
academics or life in general.
The need to seek the wisdom of those
that may have gone before you or know better is a place we ought to get
comfortable with in order to thrive in whatever life journey we choose
to pursue.
In academia, this may involve inviting a
handful of people you would meet for discussion on whatever subject you
need assistance in.
In general life application, you
never need to do life alone if the opportunity to have an
accountability partner would result in better choices and save both time
and distress resulting from failed attempts. Of course this doesn't mean that one may not thrive by themselves. However, knowing when you need help and seeking it in time is a priceless virtue to have.
Like a baby’s attempts at walking
without help with multiple stumbling incidents, keep steadfast and
diligently apply yourself even when you are faced with a failed exam or
recurring obstacle.
Sooner than later, you will enjoy the satisfaction of victory that comes from striving regardless of circumstances.
