What to Study?
Here is the thing, students: If you are good with numbers and enjoy working with them, and you know you are terrible with essays and public speaking, focus on the thing you are strong at. I am not saying that you should not try and develop other skills, including public speaking but do not desire to do something just because it looks cool and the prettiest girl in class is good at it.
Some people can talk, a lot for that matter. Maybe they should be on radio. But you are not very good with talking. In fact, you prefer to be alone and play chess on your computer. There is nothing wrong with that. All courses or careers can be cool, depending on who is looking at them. For me, history is my thing. I like to learn about the Mandelas of this world, about Hitler and his obsessions, or about the kind of history Donald Trump is going to make. Also, in school, I performed well in social studies during primary and history was an easy breeze in high school.
But what can one do with history? Can I even major in that? In Uganda? Frankly, it is a hard one to sell to anyone. Imagine telling your parents that you want to study history – wouldn’t they want to disown you for not choosing to do Law instead? Well, there is so much one can do with a degree in history, including teaching, politics, research and providing analyses or perspectives on how histories can shape and even determine the future of a people, a nation or country.
Do not get confused by the many options you encounter at university. Simply be in tune with what you really want and what you enjoy. The advantage of studying what you really like and enjoy is that you will be more willing to work hard at it, and to make it work. The truth also that many people may not tell you is that the thing you like to do, you will likely also do well and it will provide for you – if you stick with it.
Here is my question and challenge to you: what do you enjoy to do or what subjects do you enjoy? Dare to research on them and what it is you can do with them beyond university.
